The first introduction to Alfie is through a married woman. The second time he introduces himself with my favourite movie quote. A quote I have cited multiple times, a recurring theme.
I look up the Alfie quote. I twist it: These days even I don’t believe the lies I tell myself.
I play with the idea. I come up with an aphorism: Your choices determine the lies you tell yourself.
The repetition of the theme reveals more than the words.
The deduced conclusion is embarrassing: The lies I tell myself are the lies I tell others about myself.
